Julie, that photo has 2 320w studiomax II strobes on each side of me and theyre up i'd say mm 7ft or so angled down on the shoulders and slightly behind me angled forward to put light onto my shoulders. Then to emulate a ringflash since i dont have one, i put a 160w studiomax light about 5ft high and made it so it was projected evenly on my face. the camera was positioned right below the front light. lol the reason why all the test shots are the same position is cuz i cant get a full body shot because my cable release is only like 5ft long

haha thats really me, i'm a sophomore at Indiana University, last year in the dorms everyone called me Jean Claude Van Damme! other than that and on dpchallenge thats the only time i've ever been called that...weird haha!

You can't blame us, we're PHOTOGRAPHERS and we notice these things. I spent half an hour googling after you posted the lighting info, seeing if I could "prove" you were really JCVD, and I actually came to the conclusion you may NOT be. How does that make you feel?
My advice to you? Send this picture to him and seek employment as his double for the movies. Make a few bucks while you're young & beautiful :-)
A lot of those look great, some look like he is trying to over compensate a bit.
It looks like selective over sharpening to me.
If you mess around with different layers having different unsharp mask settings you can kinda see this start to happen, then you can play with blending modes.
I agree, his lighting is superb and the main reason his images look the way they do.
Look in Portfolio 3...top row 3rd image...that's an example of what I would call bad judgment.
Then, you look at the 5th image and it represents brilliance to me. That image makes me wish this dude would want to work with me. Well, many of his images do. But, that one is superb. So simple and so strong. Love the lighting!

Random. My two friends/business partners just got out of U of I and moved here (los angeles).
They were in the computer science/programming/web development/graphic design classes lots. I don't know their exact majors. I should ask once they take off the headphones for a break.

arefuge: I agree with you on what you say about his shots..I think most people (me included) see his photos and focus so much on the effect of the image rather than the composition and subject, alot of his shots are almost digicam-ish in their randomness and composition but they're a million times cooler because you're so dumbfounded by the style. The name Retrum sounds familiar, ask them when you get a chance what their major is because mine's informatics which we should have some classes that overlap
I'm gonna take some more shots and work on the lighting a little more today and see if I can pull anything cooler out of it, any suggestions? and arefuge thanks for the suggestion on the usm layers I'll give that a look at too I hadn't thought of that before!
Haha... so many that there is no way I could duplicate it. I could come close but not the same.
It was 2-3 hours of work. Most of that was taken up by close attention to Dodging & Burning. Also some highpass sharpening, selective desaturation and contrast boosting using the green channel.
Unfortunately its ISO 800 or 1600 (cant remember) so its quite noisy. Noise dosent suit this style well.

Unless he has access to Jean Claude Van Damme as a model, I doubt he did the lighting...
