I recently got myself a portable hard drive ("Noontec Gigasave") that is designed to work with digital cameras. If you connect the camera to the hard drive using the normal USB cable, and press the magic button on the hard drive, it copies the entire contents of your memory card into a new folder on the hard drive. The hard drive itself can be powered by USB (if you have a laptop handy, or one of those USB power cords that plugs into a USB socket), or by 4 AA batteries that fit into a handy attachment. I got this for a little under A$200 (for 40GB, more than enough for me).
It's not as convenient as a device that will read CF cards directly, or one that has a screen on it for previewing, but these were going to be substantially more expensive.
