I've been looking for some portable lights but can't decide........I also think I have a great potential to die from extreme electrical shock :-)
I've been using my Canon 580, 550 and 420 flashes as my "extremely portable" lights. A small bag that holds stands, umbrellas and lights is all I need to carry with me.
I recently purchased new studio lights. I went with the VersaLight and MobiLight strobes from JTL. They are both essentially the same thing, but the MobiLight comes with a battery pack that lets me take it out where there are no electrical outlets available. They are much bigger than my Canon flashes, but they put out a lot more light too. So now I have two solutions... an ultra portable and a semi-portable. :-)
Convert image to 16-bit TIFF, open in photomatix pro, create tone-mapped version, adjusting the sliders until it looks about right. Export to PS7, burn in the foreground a little, and make a jpg for display. That's it :-)
I think he performed a bit more post than I did on this shot to get him them there. Probably had better initial shot to work with as well. lol To me this always had a bit of a cartoon look although I minimized it. I actually got that effect by using the unsharp mask. I didn't apply it as heavy as I could of because I was shooting for a bit less of the effect. I will post the original later when I get home to do so. Looking at Joey L work inspired me to try and recreate that sort of effect.

I tried to post steps with the pic for anyone that is interested. Also, one step I forgot was that somewhere in there I did add a diffuse glow layer and blend it in.

I think that worked well. I like that shot alot. Too bad you don't rmember exactly how you did it, because that would be cool to know!
HOW WIERD!!!!!! my friend just showed me that dave hill's website today.... he's a friend of their family and she thought i'd like his work! he's way awesome! cool
