I have 5 comments. They are all very short, 1 line or less. I've made far less comments in recent weeks. I have spent more time trying to get all the pics voted on and not so much time leaving comments. Plus trying to fit a few or ten critiques in a week too is also eating up a fair amount of time.
My new rule is if I have less than one line in the comment box, I'm not saying anything. If there is some constructive criticism to a potentially good photo, I'll definitely leave it. If the photo is really really good IMO, I'll leave a pat on the back comment, but those are maybe 2 or 3 a challenge.
As for the 1's and 2's... some things are better left unsaid I've learned.

Personally, I'm less likely to mark a blandly complimentary comment 'helpful' than I am to mark a critical comment that actually says something substantive about why they thought so. Boy, that's convoluted grammar. I'd much rather get a comment (and be much more likely to mark it helpful once I did) that says, "Your photo sux. It's boring. It looks like a snapshot. You're a waste of disk space," than one that says, "Wow, cool concept." Of course, I'd rather get a reasoned critique than either, but can you see how the first comment is more 'helpful'?
The person who commented that they thought the border was too heavy was at least trying to be concrete and real about what they thought, and why.
I don't agree, commenting on the border and not the main subject itself is useless, imagine buying a painting with a bad frame, you might love the painting but not like the frame, you still buy it, you just change the frame.
The comment 'Heavy border' alone says nothing about the phtograph itself, it is a trivial statement.
Yeah, but sometimes the frame's so weird and distracting that you end up not being able to concentrate on the image. :-> Whether or not you agree with them, at least they tried to tell you *what* they did or didn't like about the picture. IMHO.
Ok point taken, but a comment on the photo as well would have been nice. In short I really don't care that much, hard day and all that, just caught me as really pointless that's all.
I just got two comments, within minutes of each other, that are complete opposites: one was 'I like blah blah blah...' and the other I don't like blah blah blah ...' where the blahs are the same element of the photo.
Getting great feedback. High scores from some of the better photographers here. But I think I might just have to get as many people together that I know with internet access and have them vote for me. That's the only way I'll ever get out of the "fives"......lol. Hey it wouldn't take that many :). Maybe 50 or sixty to sway the votes. Don't suppose anyone is that desperate to win here.....are they? Kinda would take the fun out of it now wouldn't it? Naw, if I couldn't win fair and square it just wouldn't mean anything. Here's an idea, why not let just members vote for the next couple of challenges. Wonder if that would change the voting trends of late....Just a thought. Take care. :)
I'm now up to 120 votes... 5.02 for a score, still NO comments... now I know it's not all about the comments, but this is weird that not a single person has decided to say something about mine. I haven't had that happen before! I think I might put in a really racy one that will get lots of comments next time just for fun
Excellent point General. I for one haven't been leaving as many comments either. I just have not had time. Heck, I'm not even sure I'll get through with the voting.
But, I'll try. I promise. (not that a comment from me is earthshattering or anything!)
I find it really hard to leave a comment on an uninteresting or poor quality photo. In fact, I just don't do it. I can't find any merit to a photo of say, gravel or something that resembles curtains even though it might show great texture or focus or whatever. (i hope no one has entered any of these)

btw.. if I have left you a comment that only says 'great job or I like it' and not really given it a critique and it bothers you, E-mail me and I will gladly remove it. Those type of comments have taken some heat lately and may be one reason comments are down. I will continue to give them to my favorite photos. °¿°

I'd rather see those kind of comments than the ones that completely rip apart a photo. You can leave that kind of comment for me anytime you want, I'd rather have someone say I like it or great job than try to destory my confidence by saying something like I hate this...
I wonder if some folks aren't a bit worn out after having up to four simultaneous challenges recently...
I was thinking a similar thought... I wonder if the average number of comments is inversely related to the number of challenge entries. When there are 280 entries to vote on, e.g. "Glass", I think it's much less likely people will take time to comment on all but the best. When there are <100, the situation is quite different. And the simultaneous challenges would be icing on this cake.
280 pics is alot to comment on..... it's not easy to be constructive 280 times.... so far I have made about 50 comments.... hopefully people find them constructive.... I will try to comment on about 10 - 20 a day from here on in to the end of the voting.... as for scores... I vote 'em as I see 'em.... i really don't give much thought to the pic before or that one ten back that I really liked... nor do I vote relative to my own pic.... I just look at each one and rate it out of 10... end of story...

Todd, that is what I have done in the past and will likely revert to. Probably why my average vote is higher than normal. Not sure what my origional point was but I am begining to think I was wrong to change to a diferent method.
You don't have to vote on all the entries. If there are 100 entries and 100 voters - 100 votes per pic. If there are 300 entries and 300 voters and each votes on 100 - still 100 votes per pic. After 100 votes, the scores really don't change very much. Do you care if you come in 153rd or 168th? Wouldn't you rather have fewer votes and more comments? Pick a resonable number and just vote/comment on that number in each challenge. Then a huge challenge is no more of a chore than a small one. Someone else will vote/comment on the others.
