Personally I'd wait until the challenge is over and your identity has been revealed.

I assume you mean while the voting is still going on...
It is not prohibited to exchange PMs during the challenge, but I choose to respond to the comments after the vote concludes. You can also go back to your photo's page (after the voting's over) and add an additional comment there -- useful if several people have mentioned the same thing...

I see no problem with that. In my opinion a signed comment implies the user is OK with receiving a reply to the comment, especially if they asked a question.

I know what you mean, John. But in my mind, it doesn't make any sense for someone to leave their name with their comment if they mind being contacted during voting. What's the point, then?
I usually sign my comments, and I have no problem explaining my vote to someone who asks. Not that it will change my vote at all... if it has to be "explained" to me than it loses its appeal! :-)
