Well I can honestly say I have been waiting on the announcement. Not because I wanted it DQ'ed but just looking at the picture I felt it was beyond basic editing. If it did fall within basic I would of loved to have seen the steps.
A shame because it was a good picture and a blue on his first entry.
I just want to point out (not necessarily to you SG, but to others who may wonder), the picture was not dq'ed because it was outside the limits of basic editing. We, the SC, can't make that determination because we didn't received the original, which was why we had to dq it.
That said, you can speculate about whether it would have passed muster or not, but it is just that, speculation. Only the photog truly knows at this point.

I don't understand how come you're all that satisfied to gain one rank, your marks (it's to say the way other users appreciated your picture) remain the same, so what's the matter with being second instead of third ???
... they were essentially saying that the guy didn't deserve a blue ribbon...

Why separate the two? And anyway it's ultimately a competition so it should be taken into context. It's not war.

Precisely the problem when you feel like saying something but are too inhibited by the fear of not being liked for it.
I have a few of points:
1. It's not disrespectful to slate something - or even a person - as long as it can be reasoned. It might however be unpleasant to do so. (I slate some of my friends for not recycling, but I still respect them in other ways.) In my view he was lucky for being at the top given the quality of images lower down. I'm truly sorry if Paul (gull) has taken my one dissenting comment to heart above all the other praise. Maybe I have a point though if I have overturned his perceptions with one 'nasty' comment vs the hundreds of 'nice' ones.
2. Respect is a privilege not a right - I cannot respect or admire another without knowing why but I will treat them with civility.
3. I have commented negatively on other 'big names'' work before, as well as positively. They've always handled it because they normally have self belief and will take or leave it. No harm intended - ever, but life can be dull if all we ever do is pat each other on the back.

Let me say this. Oftentimes I don't much care for the ribbon winners. They do not seem like the right choice to my eyes, but it is a popularity contests here, and I see no reason to rain on someone else's parade. If someone gets a ribbon, it is just not right in my book to say that they didn't deserve the ribbon - why? It doesn't help. It doesn't make me feel better, it doesn't make the ribbon winner feel better, it doesn't make him/her go out and make better pictures. It does, however, come off as jealousy - it simply points out obvious (or sometimes not so obvious) stuff. So what. When someone wins a ribbon it's time to congratulate him/her in my book, not point out the obvious flaws.
BTW, I'm not afraid to disagree with people (not even mk). But in general I prefer to work for agreement. When a person works for agreement, it doesn't mean that that person doesn't have strong opinions. It's more a matter of how you express those opinions. I don't think it is necessary to always express my opinion. And I'm not afraid of people not liking me, as a matter of fact, I'm a terrible grump, and a loner, and I much rather not deal with people at all most of the time. Too much work.

I didn't come here to argue whether or not anyone else thinks the shot was illegally edited. I could personally care less what anyone thinks. It's really obvious to me that it was edited by some means other than what is legal in basic editing. The fact that the original disappeared leads to my conclusion that it was illegally edited.
If you're drunk and driving, you can refuse a breath test or a DUI test, but you were still driving drunk.
You are correct that no original makes you suspicious, but I don't think you are right to say that it is "really obvious" that the editing was illegal. It's not "really obvious".
You're entitled to disagree with me, that's fine. To me, it is definately really obvious that it was illegally edited. I would have bet any person on this entire site, heck any person in this entire world $500 the second I saw that on the front page and clicked it to see that it was basic editing, that it would be disqualified. It was and is obvious to me.
OK, we can disagree on this. I prefer to have solid evidence.

Didn't SC indicate that the original didn't just disappear? It was sent in twice but was improperly transferred. The first couple of challenges I entered I'd have met the same fate. Then I learned to transfer directly from the card to the hardrive using only the OS file handling tools.
