When a border is indistinguishable from the image itself, it becomes something added TO the image itself. If you'd drawn a 1-pixel white border, then you could have added as much black as you wanted outside that because the white hairline would have defined the end of the image and the beginning of the border. That's the way I read it, anyway...

Thanks MK. I just take this as learning experience. So I'm not upset about the DQ. Now I understand the advanced editing rules much clearer and if there's ever any of a tiny doubt in the future, I'll ask for help. Only upset I had to learn on a blue ribbon pic. There was a take with more negative space in the original but the reflection was still there, so either way it was a DQ from the start. I also take with me the experience of taking the shot as well. So not much is lost after all :)

I would have left the reflection in and just flipped or rotated the photo 180 degrees. After all it was "Abstract Food". Without the extra reflection it is just a picture of an egg.

Mine was DQ'd too. I got some wonderful comments though... actually a record number.
For those of you who asked how I did it, it's just a built-in effects filter in Paint Shop Pro. Its called Sandstone. Its a lot of fun to play with and I have quite a few photos of my playing in my portfolio.
I just won't be entering any more in contests LOL. Guess it was a little over the top. The SC gotta do what they gotta do.

I bet many more folks will remember YOUR image as the blue!! Negative advertising works wonders sometimes!

With the reflection it is an abstracterish picture of an egg. I made that word up by the way. No need for another forum.
Looking at this in a positive way, perhaps the DQ educates people on the difficulties of shooting a mirror at a low angle. I'm always calling this web-site a "CLASS".
Since the post-processing provided a "cheat" out of this problem it makes sense to DQ.
Congrats to the new ribbon winners. And a big thanks to Techo and Faye, two good attitudes displayed after being knocked out of the challenge. metatate said it -- "CLASS" -- as in you two are a classy act, and a fine example for the many dpc'ers who have a hard time acting like adults when things don't always go their way.
I say we give Techo a special ribbon just for being a good sport. You know, like I should have won in Little League, but they gave it to some other guy...really ticked me off. I was a good sport for nuthin'.
Techo...that was an absolutely fantastic shot. You should be proud, ribbon or not.
Usually I don't even notice a DQ on the front page, or I wonder which picture it is. This time I noticed it instantly.
Disappointing, but still an awesome picture and your editing skills are amazing too. You may have lost a ribbon, but I'm sure you can make some other use of that image - if not at dpcprints, I'm sure you can sell it somewhere else. If it were mine, it would probably land up on microstock, but really it's far too good an image for that.
Yeah, I'll probably get crapped on for this, but this is yet another case of a fine line. What is / what isn't a major element. A telephone pole isn't, backgrounds haven't been, I know I've cloned out as much cleaning up shots.
I'm lost.
I would have done the same and never gave it a second thought, even after entering 152 challenges here.

What would be good is to have a secton on this site that had examples of what is and isnt legal under each rule set. This image could then be included under the "remove major elements" section as the "major element" in it seems to be one of the more contentious.

That's what I have been thinking. If any SC are available I have put a request in to have my B/W in color entry looked at because now I'm more confused then ever about the major element rule.
Techo's dq was to my advantage and I was able to ribbon as a result. While I am elated, I really commend Techo for the amazingly gracious attitude. I think his image was a ribbon winner and deservedly so. It will always be a great image and Techo will always have my highest respect for the way he has responded. Well done. Thanks to everyone who made some great comments on my shot...

Go to Help - contact but it is not a validation it is just an opinion of a SC.
To clarify, the reflection was not the only reason for the DQ. The canvas was also expanded and black negative space added to the sides, changing the composition from the original with empty space which was not there before. Just a note so that people understand it fully.
This is hilarious. I think you should investigate all my challenge submissions, I'm sure you'd find several that you could disqualify. Was that a serious post?
