When it comes to enforcing the age rule, I think that we should go on the "Honor Code" regardless. Maybe state in the rules that failure to comply with the code would result in a suspension as a deterrent. As far as I'm concerned, if a +21 individual cares that much about getting a ribbon and beating younger kids, then they belong in the <21 category.

I think we learned from the 2-second exposure challenge that the honor code does not necessarily work.

in the 2 second exposure though, there wasnt really a guilt factor or something making the people think twice before entering non 2 second shot. Also adding on a suspensio for a foundout age of over 21 is a good idea to in my opinion.
Does the younger crowd really need extra encouragement here? Seems to me that some of them do quite well in competition with all other ages, and that as a group they are able to hold their own. Hardly a week goes by that there is not at least one fron Joey, or elsapo, etc. on the front page. Konador and zoomdak are teenagers who have multiple ribbons. If any age group gets their own challenge the ribbons would not mean as much as those won against all ages. To me, if I won a ribbon in an old folks only challenge it would always have a bit of a stigma attached to it. In the past when we have had restrictions on who could enter a challenge it has been to recognize people for something they have done here at dpc, such as winning ribbons or making lots of comments. Do young people need to be recognized just for being young? or old people for being old?
to me this is just a flag for the creepies out there (not necessarily users or members of dpc, though statistically, we probably have some) to easily find young members.

hmm... how many pervs go to a digital photography site mostly aimed at the older crowd to look for children?
myspace is a much easier site to do that... you can narrow your search down to age, location, school, gender and status, and most of the underage kids have mostly naked self portrait photos of themselves in the bathroom mirror already there for everyone to see.
oh yeah, not to mention, most kids involved in a site like this have talent and ambition, not the low-self esteem that is needed to trick a kid into meeting you somewhere

point taken. I admitted I was paranoid about it. I just don't see why we should make it so easy to find the young people.
I agree with you Karmat... I just think that kids are ok as long as they don't put too much info on their profiles, and that they don't meet up with strangers... that's mostly how it happens. The kid has low self esteem and is begging for attention and thinks this person is a friend or whatever the perv lies to them about, and agrees to meet them, either in their own house or some public place where-ever, but I don't think that it would pose a problem..
not saying that it wouldn't and I'm not saying that you shouldn't feel that way, it's good to be cautious, especially with the kind of stuff that happens these days, but I personally don't feel that anything bad would come of this kind of challenge at this site... maybe there could be some kind of announcement with the challenge for any underager to be very cautious of PMs or something... and not give out your street address or agree to meet anyone you don't know
Amanda, the only problem I have with your theory is that someone could use the child's love for photography as a lure.
Also, there are quite a few artist that struggle with self-esteem problems and is in part why they turned to the arts as a hobby.
ok, well, I'm one of those (self esteem problems that is)...
maybe if they're under 18, special rules is a parent notification, but I guess that would be a lot of work for SC.... hmmm... well, maybe a mandatory "don't talk to strangers" and counseling session... lol
Don't get me wrong, I know these things happen, it's unfortunate, I would just like to delude myself that everyone has the know-how to not get into situations like that....
