it's exactly this type of thread that keeps me and, i feel sure, many others from commenting on anything except high scores. publicly calling someone out for a comment is completely unnecessary.
personally, I think anyone who PM's anyone else with an attack of any kind for ANY comment left in a challenge that doesn't violate the ToS, should be suspended or evicted.
that kind of behavior is what creates the atmosphere of fear of verbal retribution for honest citicism. take all comment you get gracefully and with a grain of salt regardless if you think you know where they came from and stfu.

I comment alot and so far I haven't been too terribly abused. I've only had one person PM me to say I didn't get it - but it wasn't rude. I do get some clarification via PM sometimes, which I don't mind.

Sher, I can appreciate your opinion, but I look at it from a different perspective...
Call me out anytime! I feel amused by those that are small minded enough to think that someone may not like their work... I enjoy photographers that have nothing at all to learn from negative comments. I appreciate that some may not like what I have to say but most take my comments as they are meant. PM me! Call me out! Make yourself look silly! I enjoy it. I need a good laugh every once in a while! :-)
Dont get yourself too worked up over it. If you go through all his comments, for every nice comment (which often seem to be a back-handed compliment) he gives 10 negative ones... His "Not Original" comment on my submission for the same challenge certainly didnt do me any favors either...
I think its funny how people, and in this case a "professional" photographer, who have the most negative things to say, are those that don't participate in the challenges...
To me there is a difference between constructive criticism, and being rude, and comments like: "Not original", "There is a small ring on the lenes where you adjust the focus. Next time please use it.", and "Dumb and or duh. Weak setup." certainly come across as arrogant and rude.
While I can agree that it would be hard to place any value in his comments, the thing to do is not mark them as helpful and forget about it. He is still entitled to his opinion. And I think these threads do way more damage to the participation of members than some possibly discouraging comments.
There are many pros, amateurs and everything in between whose comments I would love to receive without them fearing their opinions may be subject to public attack.
I am so pissed off right now by a 2 vote from a member (in Sins) who porports to be a professional yet puts down my image down as a "badly taken setup"
How do you know he voted you a "2" ? I dont think he mentioned it on his comment, and neither will DPC show who voted what. This is weird!
And then, he said the photo looked like a setup, not accusing you of cheat. Setup means the subject are set in the way to be shot at?
Finally, you got a yellow ribbon, congrats :) I'm sure the photo was verified by the SC and all is well. cheers!

I was already about to post a reply saying exactly this. It's EXACTLY this kind of reaction, and even more so, the extremely immature PM sent to the commenter, that is the reason for my no longer bothering to comment any images that I feel are particularly weak.
I always used to vote, and I used to comment as many entries as I could in a given challenge, trying to include as many in the middle range as I could since I felt these would benefit most from feedback on their weaknesses (in one viewer's eyes only).
Now I tend to comment only on shots I like much more (or that are taken by friends who will not react so immaturely to my honest opinions - and no I don't vote on an image after finding out who has taken it - if I'm not voting on a challenge I let friends know that I'll provide a comment if they would like one.
There are way too many people who profess to want honest feedback but who really only want comments that are positive or jibe exactly with their existing views on their image.
It's funny to me me how often I provide a carefully thought out comment, which takes time to write and provide, and if it isn't glowing, it's not marked helpful even though other single word comments praising the image are! Hilarious!
But this kind of calling out and personal messaging is much worse. How disappointing.
Two conflicting issues here:
1: We need to create an environment where people are free to give negative (but constructive) critiques without being attacked.
2: FOR GOD'S SAKES STOP VOTING LOW ON PHOTOS IF YOU THINK THEY DESERVE A DQ. READ THE RULES!
How do we keep asking for 2: in these forums without negating 1:?
2: FOR GOD'S SAKES STOP VOTING LOW ON PHOTOS IF YOU THINK THEY DESERVE A DQ. READ THE RULES!
I think the poster has misunderstood the comment he received.
Also, there is no way he could have known what was the score given by anyone in particular?
UPDATE: upon checking, byrongates's profile shows he has NEVER voted on any challenges before, LOL!!!
To Ecce Signum:
If you have such a difficult time dealing with an occasional low vote, perhaps you should lay off of the update button and stop trying to figure out what every vote is. We all know that you can't do that with any amount of accuracy. And we all know that even the highest scoring images usually get a few low votes. Your yellow ribbon shot got a much bigger spike at the top end of it's curve than at the bottom. Byron did not violate any rules nor did he attack you personally. His only crime was that he didn't like your shot as much as you, and the voters, did. I think an apology would be in order.

Yes, I agree totally! I WAS WRONG on 2 counts, and unreserveadly apologise to all concerned. I acted in an improper way and my punishment (as well as being sounded out here) was to tarninsh my first ever ribbon celebrations with the guilt of making a fool of myself!
My points still stand but, of course they were my points and should not have been aired in this manner (nor should I have sent the pm and will correct that when I get home).
I consider myself well and truly slapped on the wrist and, the update button is going to take a back seat from my on.
Andi, it takes guts to apologise and admit when one has stepped over a line! Kudos on that front.
Sadly, it doesn't make me feel more inclined to comment because I too have received somewhat confrontational PMs over past comments and an apology later on wouldn't completely erase the upset at receiving it in the first place.
Still, as I say, much appreciate your latest post.
Although Ecce was out of line, Byron needs to take himself a little less seriously and not be so concerned with impressing people.
Understanding the author's intended tone in their profiles and emails/posts are difficult so please do not take offense.
I just find it rather amusing at your lengthy diatribe in response to Ecce's PM.
I was thinking of another one. There was one that pretty much picked it apart- which is fine. But they still scored lower then me. The snapshot commenter did not enter. Which is usually the case, a comment like that and no entry. Or a not so nice comment and a hidden voter lol. Those are my favorites. All in all I haven't had an horrible comments and I've taken what I can and applied it to my work and that's the whole point here isn't it?
Nobody is perfect and there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
