Put a piece of tape on your flash and that should eliminate the glare. Most of the shots I take are using the normal setting on my camera. I do use macro quite a bit. Do you at least have that?

This is my most studio-like shot I've taken: //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=10239
It was done sitting in my dorm room without a tripod (I don't own one) and with a 40 watt desk lamp with a sheet of printer paper over it to diffuse the light. One of my favorite shots I've taken.

what makes me think this is for the northern hemisphere...
its hot as hell here... and staying indoors is hell

My studio consists of my house and tv studio here at work which if I decided to use I could only use after work hours so I haven't bothered. I generally take my camera and lights to the subject. I don't have a set up room in the house. This weeks challenges will most likely be "studio" shots for me. I think studio shots tend to be easier for me to do because I can control the enviroment most of the time.

With my old camera, I had no manual controls at all, or a tripod, and I am very happy with some of the studio shots I got (which were taken on my bed with my bed-sheets as a backdrop!)

Here are a couple of examples of studio shots, lit with a desklamp, and no manual controls at all:

Strike
Wormhole Relativity
Death of VHS
Absolute Zero
All Fall Down


And this last one was lit using a homemade set of red green and yellow disco lights on a plank of wood, left over from the Millenium!

I think the trick is just making best use of what you have available.

Duct tape will fix that... put it over the flash.

Duct tape will fix anything and everything. The world will only be at peace when our leaders find enough Duct tape.
