I have had one comment on my pic for the free study x comp. I am on 4.8 so a few threes in there but I am not too botherd because the one person that commented actually gets my photo and what I am trying to put accross:) yay:)
It's certainly possible to make it so that people coundn't vote a 1, 2 or 3 without leaving a comment first, but is it desirable?
Well, why not give it a try and see how it works. If the voting rules are made the way they are, there must be a reason. So, as long as the rules require the voters to comment their 1's, 2's and 3's, lets stick to them.
I know I would love any comment and am quite capable of sorting out any sour, rude or irrelevant remarks. They say more about the voter than the picture.

Have you read the whole thread? The rules do not require voters to comment with a vote of 1, 2 or 3; they only suggest it. And the reason that was put in there was because a lot of people were complaining, ad nauseam, that they didn't understand why their entries got some low votes. It was pretty obvious at the time it was put into the rules that it would not improve things. I think it has made them worse by confusing people.
Forced comments will never be as good as those given willfully. Look at how many forum threads there are now where people complain about low votes and comments they don't like, too many. And there would be more, maybe lots more. Pleading to get more comments, and complaining about the ones that are given are not good ways to encourage more constructive criticism.
Two things that we all need to accept here at dpc are:
1) almost every entry gets some low votes; and
2) images rarely get as many helpful comments as the photog would like.
It would be a positive step for the community as a whole, and as individual photographers, if people would adjust their thinking on these two points so that they have more realistic expectations.

I don't think everyone here is after points, what I have seen from the different threads is that most people want to learn, and we more often than not, learn from those that have greater experience. I have already learned from the 'Learn' articles, and from the threads/discussions.
My two pics here have gotten almost 300 votes, but only 6 remarks, and even if they are short, there are a couple of eye-openers there, and I sure would love some mor. From the average at the moment, it is clear that there are a lot of 1's-3's, and had hoped I would get more remarks. I do not have high expectations regarding points, but I have expectations, or hopes, regarding remarks, I have expectations, no, I am absolutely sure that I have a lot to learn from all the people here.
A lot of you have been here for several years now, and you know the ropes. If you expect the newbees to adapt to your way, in every way, maybe you should think again, or as you say yourself 'adjust your thinking. :-)
I don't know about coding or website design or anything like that. I don't know how do-able this suggestion would be: Maybe the 1, 2, and 3s could be un-clickable or greyed out until a comment was entered?

A comment could certainly be forced, but not the content. A simple . would bypass the restraint.
I wonder how many PM flame wars would be started by forcing a comment on the lower (1,2,3) votes as the commenter/voter would then be identified?
Oh, wait - I know. If I don't want to be inundated with PM's and still want to vote a 1, 2, or 3 I could comment like this "Nice". The photographer of that entry would STILL be left scratching their head on the low votes. ;^)
Too easily circumvented. Nice thought, but really don't see anything changing about this subject.

I don't think it is possible to do much about this, but 300 votes, 6 comments, that is low. Seems to be the rule. It is sometimes difficult to know what to say, and forced comments don't make the receiver happy. Let's hope people just keep it in mind that most of us really apreciate comments.
Well, a new record low, I'm sure. 13-3's, 1-2, 0-1. However NOT A SINGLE COMMENT from anyone. Try to beat that!

I have one that is the same 10-3s, 5-2s, 0-1s. No comments, but I'm not looking for comments I think the actual fact that it has no comment is comment enough.
