For those that voted low because of the "danger" factor - I just don't buy it. Did you vote lower on this blue ribbon shot because of the photographer's safety? In this shot the photographer could have EASILY fallen over and DIED - not just gotten a few specks of metal in their eye.
Maybe it's because it's a cute girl though... you sayin' Joey Lawrence isn't cute enough to care about his safety? Whoa!

For those unfamilar with firefighting, the steeple raise is a traditional excercise and actually a rather safe procedure.

As a student of Americana and history, I loved the pinup feel here. Your only problem was in the genre you selected.
You were depending on people knowing and understanding the pin up genre. Anyone who's not a fan or knowledgeable is not going to make the connection. For them, the nudity appears to have no place and is gratuitious.
That's not good or bad, just is. You did a great job overall in getting your message across. That's always something to take pride in. :)

Interesting, but it missed my point. Perhaps THIS will work! HA! There's no way you can tell me this guy is safe!
My first thought was, "OK, someone else is using sex for votes." As I kept looking at it to decide how to vote, I really had to make a decision on whether or not she was real. Her skin, except for her face, looks like wax to me. That was my main distraction. Is it art? Yes. Is it to my taste? No, but I would have scored it high had it stirred an emotion in me and been technically great. I'm not sure I should have to decide if the model is a person or mannequin, and either way I didn't like the yellowish skin tone.

I took the photo to be a very well done art peice. I voted it a 7. Although I dont agree to her being Nude with no eye protection just because of the danger of her getting a serious injury. However we all sacrafice for our art huh. :-) Anyway I'd be dang proud to finish as well as you did. This is a tough crowd to please. You have to be nearly perfect and be PC so to speak IMHO to get a Ribbon, either that or have a style thats recognized and have folks vote for who you are, or who they think it is. Be proud of your art, these scores in reality are meaningless unless you make them meaningful. I like to use the sight to make me think about things I normally wouldnt shoot.
Not a perfect shot, but definatly art. And definatly good work. Great composition. Skin tones may be considered "off" but in view of available light and reflection from the grinder sparks may be dead on. The "mannequin" look? If it was intended, it works. This was meant to be an abstract of sorts and exact documentary style photography is niether warrented nor desired.
I think the shot may have been stronger if the girl was wearing safety glasses, but from a safety point of view I can't remember how many times in my life I have picked up a side grinder or put something on the bench grinder for a quick touch without glasses. I don't recomend it, but out of mere expedience it is a rather common practice.
The challenge was for an Industrial Feel, not for an actual industrial locale.
Well the problem with this photo is it lacks the "industrial feel" and there really isn't a clever idea or interesting story behind the shot to help overcome any anti-nudity backlash. It just "seems" like nudity for nudity sake hence why many would rank it very low just because of that.
For me the whole photo was just too soft and warm and when I think of industrial I think of cold, harsh and edgy. Perhaps if the two opposites were emphasized better this might have worked, IMO.
As for the score, I think it got what it should have. You could make the argument that this didn't deserve the 9's and 10's it got so overall I think it averaged out just right. However, looking at how everything got voted it seems people just wanted to see smoke stacks win. I thought there were several other interesting takes that should have been ranked better so perhaps you just picked the wrong time to be more creative.
Honestly? First thought when I saw it was someone is trying to shoehorn a pretty naked lady into the challenge. Thought it was too much of a 'sell it to the voters with sex' type image.
There you go...more ammo to get this thread hopping a little while longer. ;^)
