I hate it when a person - namely my father-in-law who was born and raised in the south, ends a discussion with "I'll tell you what". He's not going to tell me anything after that - no explanantion, no addition to the conversation, just uses it as a conversation ender. Aaagghhhh !
The other thing that drives me absolutely nuts is when a person says aks instead of ask - this is done often in Detroit where my Aunt lives. She does it herself. I hate it. She says Can I aks you a questions? Eeeerrrrrrr.
My pet hate is when work colleagues turn the work 'ask' into a noun;
- "How many asks are on the list?"
- "He has a few asks"
- "Lets go through the asks"
Horrible.
Shouldn't that be [t]asks?
You'd think so, yes. But apart from hearing it in meetings, I've also seen it written in emails numerous times. Instead of 'questions', 'requests', or as you said 'tasks'...
Oh, and while I'm on a roll, here are a few more work-related phrases I hate:
- 'on the radar' ('I'll keep that on the radar', 'It fell off the radar' etc...)
- 'talk to it' (instead of 'talk through it')
- 'ping him/her' (contact someone via phone/im/email)
I'm leaving that job next week, so I can say all these things now... :)
