There's a photo in the Song Titles challenge that I am sure wasn't taken last week. I submitted a request for disqulaification and it appears the photo is still up for voting. I voted on the photo and moved on but I'm wondering what's going. Do we recieve an e-mail stating whether the photo is legit or not?
I don't want to be specific but the picture I have in question doesn't have a moon in it. I'd also like to state that I have no photos submitted in this weeks challenges so whether the photo is DQed or not doesn't affect me but those who took a legit picture.
Gee, the moon? That is a very interesting question. Is it really a suitable tool to DQ an image if you do not know from where the image originated?
Is the moon really showing the same view or phase to all DPC members, from all corners of the earth, during the same time frame? Somehow, I would have thought that we all would have seen it differently depending upon where we lived in the world? I am not knowledgeable in astronomy, so I cannot say this is the case with any authority, it just struck me as an "angles" sort of thing!
Can anyone shed some light, or should I saw, moonlight on this thought?
As a side topic, my “Song” submission was taken indoors and I had wondered if anyone would DQ me because they thought that it was truly an outdoor image. But, the moon is a much more valid forensic clue to reveal the truth in an image. I look forward to learning the truth on this challenge, I just wish I new which image was in question?

I have wondered that too. Is this also true for the Southern Hemisphere? And, is the angle the same?
can we talk about songs that have been disqualified this week and are gone? There was one that I noticed looked kind of wierd with people in the foreground and had their hands up in the air and it was casting shadows onto the stage. Looked like they were standing in front of a wall or something. I though it was photoshoped or something. It's not there anymore so I guess some other people saw the same thing.

Would the moon be inverted?
Some one in the Northern Hemisphere would see the upside down version of what ssomeone sees in the Southern Hemisphere?
On the 1st day of the challenge week the moon was illuminated 24%, which was the maximum illumination for the challenge week. I guess the photo in question shows about 30-35%. This may put it a day early. Or it could be a bit over exposed.
I didn`t request a disqulaification because i can`t be sure its not legit and if it is it`s only a day.
In regards to the moon thing. If it's the photo I think your talking about then....it would be a legit photo. Then moon is in it's proper phase.

I think it is soooo unfair to single out a picture so publicly, while the challenge is still going on. This was the only picture in this challenge with a moon in it, so you have singled out and put the focus on one photo unfairly. I know this photographer, and know the picture was taken on the 4th day of the new moon. The 5th day after it was taken was the quarter moon phase. It doesn't just "pop" from new to a quarter instantly, you know! Or do you?
You will notice that at this site that when you look up a moon phase they ask you for which time zone. Wow and to think before I posted this I did some research to make sure that I was not wrong. Hope it catches on.

it's only in regards to the time, so you can see what the moon phase will be a specific time.
the earth rotates one full time about every 24 hours, and the moon revolves around the earth about every month (give or take, depending on the month).
so in the time it takes the moon to appear in say, china, it's only gone 1/60 the way around the earth. the illumination of the moon will be half way between where it was the day before and the day after for you.
parallax and perspective don't matter at all, since we are dealing with the moon being in the same position in the sky at two different points in the earth's rotation.
so no. location has nothing to do with moon phase. only the position of the moon relative to the sun.
Asking for a time zone is a little misleading because no matter where you are on earth you are the moon has the same phase to within 1/2 %. Selecting a time zone is really changing the time by that amount of hours which will alter the phase quite a bit over 24hrs.
I think that the moon question is pretty much resolved, don’t you?
Unless, someone has a set of outside calibers with which to measure it tonight, and then they can extrapolate back to the date of submission for this image in question to confirm its legitimacy, I think that we should accept the submission at face value. Sounds logical to me. ;-)
OK. So I misunderstood. Maybe the person that took the photo took it because he or she likes photography and wanted to get some positive or creative feedback so that he or she can improve on his or her techniques so that he or she can take better photos and doesn't realy care whether the photo "WINS" the challenge.
I would bet that the administrators looked at the submitted photo and found that the time stamp was legit and didn't waste there time any more than that.

And why does Jimmyn4 and marbo want to go on such a "witch-hunt"? I thought those days were long since past (outside of Salem, MA and Washington,DC). I think these guys have been staring at the moon too much!
If liltool goes, then I'm leaving, too. After all, who knows who the next target will be around here.

My mistake! I wrote that post, not realizing my husband (autool) was signed in. That was my feelings. But after talking to him, he told me not to edit it, but leave it as written.

Azrifel, the picture was taken on 5 Jan 2003, and the moon was 5 days from a full quater moon. Plus, what hasn't been brought up, is that where we live there has been a lot of haze and mist in the air, which causes an aura around the light of the moon making it appear fuller in the picture.
Ah, I see now. I had the impression it was about a moon shot from the Travel Challenge. Sorry. I will remove the stuff in the other post. If you need the moonposition on your location at that day, let me know. I have a program that can calculate the position of any object at the sky for every date at any location.

jimmyn4, YOU started this thread with an accusation that the picture wasn't legit, even though the challenge is currently running. How fair is that?
And, yes, I HAVE read all the posts. If you had also, you would see that 20 minutes before you posted the above remarks, I had posted a message telling that I had mistakenly posted under my husband's user name. We have both entered pictures on DPChallenge, as has our adult daughter, two grown sons, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Until now, we have enjoyed this site very much, and enjoyed sharing the hobby even more. I'm afraid your starting this thread has spoiled much of that, as our son has had enough and is leaving this site. It is his picture.
