Sorry, I had to add some jocularity to all of the aggression here. I for one gave a 10 to one of the northern lights shots. I found it artful and quite lovely. But being in Texas, somebody might enjoy a photo of a longhorn steer, whereas I've seen a million.
If I find something trite (water droplets, waterfalls, etc) I still will not rate it a 1 - but might mention to the photographer that although it is a well trodden path, they did it well, blah blah blah.
I'm getting way too wordy, so I'll stop now. Think I'll take a drink in honor of notonline.

please don't generalize - you can't tar all images / subjects with same brush & you can make a mundane topic special -

So I've got a pretty picture I think the voters are gonna like that's on-topic, and I should enter something else because the "pretty picture" is clichéd? Doesn't make sense, sorry. If you're gonna blame anyone, blame the voters. When they stop scoring water droplets, windmills, Cannon Beach, and sunsets/sunrises at the top of the list, we'll see a dropoff in those shots. Guaranteed.

Actually, I don't think I gave any one's. Maybe a few 3's for being totally blurred or a bad photo, but not ones that I can remember. I rarely do that anyway! J

I would agree with you, but the problem is this thread didn't start with an intelligent and thought provoking statement. I'd suggest you re-read the original post before YOU start pulling the thou is holier than me stuff...JMO of course. ;^)
Ya know that's bull...I've never pulled "holier than thou" on anyone. I've voiced my opinions and been shot down for them before. I wasn't just talking about this thread...I'm talking about any thread where someone opinion gets shot down. SO here again...I am wrong in how I think.
And I haven't called people names and told them that their opinions are wrong and called them out like some one this site has. And the some that has have been SC members! I don't make fun or insult any other photographer.
how can you leave a message like that when your highest rated photos are of water drops and a baby. Let people photo what they want, moving water is a great way for a newbie to experiment with shutter speeds and get good results, as is sunsets and moonlit pictures. Babies are easy to experiment with soft light, filler flash, b/w with filters. If a picture is technically correct and fits the challenge, it should get a good score, if it is technically correct and creatively impressive, it deserves a great score.
The real problems are the people who send in candid snapshots as contest entries, those are a true waste of everyones time.

and flashes... what's with all the photos where people use their flash? you know, some people around here only have a point and shoot with a crappy little flash so close to the lens that you'd guess from photos their family really did have bright red eyes... yet others (ie "the rich") are using big expensive flashes with TTL metering, balanced fill, *wireless* capability!!!
i mean... just exactly how is that _fair_?

its plenty fair. Small point and shoots can do great things, just people need to know their limitations. Some of my best pics are from my old 1.3MP fuji. I just bought a nicer DSLR, doesn't mean I automatically get great pictures just by turning the thing on. I get just as frustrated and pissed with my results as I did with my old digi camera, and my old film 35mm.
You forgot to specify that the scenery was a sleep inducing and boring waterfall splashing a water droplet on the surface of your coffee as you were driving by towards the cliche sunset shining through multiple times in the multiple drops on your windshield...
