I believe the original post mentioned the technique in the context of the current entries, and the forum category chosen was Current Challenge, not "Photography Discussion" or "Software Discussion" or any of the other places it could have been placed so as not to stress the connection between this technique and current entries.

Wrong again. It was trying to influence photographers to take a look at their own photos and maybe make a few decisions about when and how much of a certain processing technique needs to be used. The fact that it *may* influence voting was never on my mind for a second, but that's the last I'll say of it, because people will believe what they will.

Actually, it's raining and night-time here. I've done a lot of shooting lately as well. Excuse me for having an opinion and *trying* to enlighten a few people (the photographers), in some small way. But I forgot, that's not wanted here :) I mean, really, if the photographers are happy with their work and don't care what I say, great. All the power to them.
Arty - I agree with you and I'm surprised that many people don't at least, understand your points whetner they agree with you or not.
It's not at all about NeatImage per se but motives, unhealthy trends and a sheep like mentality...oh, and a ton of gratuitous butt kissing, popularity contest type of junk, layered on top. That's how I see it and I assume/know MANY others do as well and are pretty put off by it. Please understand, at the very, very least that these feelings are out there.
I have little use for Elvis Impersonators and wouldn't dream of lavishing any degree of high praise on anyone who I percieve went distinctly, out of their way to ape anothers work to garner points or ribbons solely for that sake. Many people here try different techniques and styles but put in some effort to make these attempts their own and not wholesale copies. AND I know some will say how can you make those assumptions and I would answer....huh?
I come here SPECIFICALLY to get away from the population that lets itself get overun by MTV, Paris Hilton, Ashley Simpson, Donald Trump, and billions of cruddy reality shows.
Also, I'm not pissed about my score (Avg Vote: 6.5143)...just a little tired of Reality Shows and what produces them.

Me, too. I tried the Gaussian blur technique that bear_music suggested a couple of weeks back (if it wasn't him, it may have been Phil Dyer...), and perhaps people might think it's NI.
Hmmmm... No one is right and no one is wrong. And everyone is right.
Anyway, NeatImage, like any other filter in your toolbox, has its uses. And like any other filter in a toolbox has its abuses. Different people have different tolerances for any filter.
What you all may also consider is that there are many newer photographers and image editors to the site who are trying out different things for the first time and don't know what is even meant by over-neat imaged. Just like any 'style' that passes through here, everyone tests it. To say they are sheep because they are trying to learn is ridiculous. This is a learning site. People learn by copying. They don't have the experience you do. Let them learn.
And, some people like the 'plastic skin' look. We are inundated with it every day in magazines, so why shouldn't they have grown used to it? Just as some like the over-saturated looks. And some the desaturated looks. And some the dodge & burn looks. and some the sepia looks. And some the grunge looks. The world is big enough. Let them have their own likes and dislikes. The best thing you can do is, rather than attacking a particular style, state an opinion with reasonably thought out points, backed with examples. It will be much more effective. Oh, and I suggest using your own work to create examples - its rude to call people out.
i thought photography was about art... weather you use neat image, dodge, burn or sharpen, clothes no clothes scarf, no scarf.... laundry basket, no laundry basket,.... whats the difference?..come on.. respect the fact that everyone is an individual and likes to try all different things......

Incidents like this seem to be happening way too often lately on this site over what should be minor disagreements in personal opinions and likes/dislikes, and its quite sad, people this is all supposed to be about the fun and enjoyment that photography can bring to ourselves and others, LIGHTEN UP!

Hear hear. Post your images, discuss them and the various techniques. Express yourself both visually and verbally. But like mfairbanks said, lighten up. There has been way too many threads that instead of discussing photography and being productivehave turned into rants and personal accusations (liek this one). There is no prize money here last I checked. Wining a challenge should be about doing a good job and getting some recognition for it. Not everybody will like it, not everybody will hate it.

Yes nobody on this site should ever dare to comment a blue ribbon winner. Everyone who even dares to question a blue ribbon winner, is a heartless bastard, and they should all "purge" account. The crappy nothing worth blue ribbon on this site is the only intangible proof of a masterpiece. Jeez!!! "purge" yourself down the toilet dude.

Sure because for some people, the only criticism there should be "wow beautiful image" and every 2'nd commenter should know the "anonymous" photographer's name during challenge.

Couldn't agree more! I've just finished dishing out more 1's than I ever thought i come close too. I've seen some (presumably) beautiful faces destroyed by over zealous post tonight. Such a shame since some of the lighting and preparation in some of those 1's was really good.
Portraits, IMHO and despite what trashy magazines might have you believe (not to mention previous Portrait challenges on DPC -- but nothing like this one!) should be accurate representations of the subject. How tragic that as soon as someone looks "really" old, we suddenly want to capture every wrinkle, yet those with natural beauty in youth or middle age get mangled into some kind of plastic freak show. *sigh*
I can't belive mysticalprincess asked what neatimage was and it took her asking three times just to get an answer. Are we turning into this kind of community? The one that doesn't answer the questions of those that don't know.

Well if this makes you and your forum popular friends happy I will not submit anymore eyther. I didn't wanna say this until the challenge is over but I don't care anymore. In the color portrait I followed the DPC winner recipee, I followed all crap that goes here, including neatimage and everything, I did it as a test to see if it's only that what counts or also to have a YM full of forum friends to vote for you. It started well. Till about 20 votes it was at about 7.50 and it keeps falling it's almost at 5. So I have my proof that this is no longer a fair and honest contest. So I won't purge my account, maybe every now and then I will enter something for fun, but it's a pitty to see how lonely can some people be to cheat for a virtual blue shit.

Sure, I can agree with that. But this challenge was about "portraiture".
To "portray" something anything but accurately in a "portrait", to me, displays a lack of dictionary reading, if nothing else. To take a beautiful, natural human body and turn it into plastic muck is nothing short of criminal. (I guess I'm an individual too huh? :)
