Hi. Here's my 2nd assignment (sorry it took so long - I was working on, and giving up on, the wood challenge!)
I found this assignment very frustrating. I'll probably take the time to try again today, because I feel like with the amount of "fixing" I did, I could have just started with the eraser!
Can I ask what size brushes you used in the extract? I started with sizes 2-4, but that gave me a real mess, so I ended up with just 1 and 2.
Well, I'll practice more & hopefully get a little better!
Oly... sorry you don't have "Filters>Render>Lighting Effects" in PS 6. It is really a pretty cool feature. I looked on my old version of PS 6 and I don't even have "Filters>Render" on it. LOL.
Almost all the improvemnets in Photoshop CS are for photographers. Both of us should upgrade. I have a friend with PS CS and it is a terrific upgrade for us photographers.
You guys both did a terrific job capturing and resizing the dog for inclusion in the Monument Valley image.
The thing you need to pay particularly close attention to is matching the inserted image with the scene where it is inserted. If you do not do that it looks artificial.
There are two things you have to keep in mind. One is contrast and the other is lighting angle with an inserted image like the dog. Both are equaly important. Both your images look a little artificial to me.
Again, you did a terrific job with everything else!
Sorry I have not finished my tutorials... I had an opportunity to take pictures in Northern AZ Saturday and also take pictures Sunday of the remnants of an ongoing wildfire and that has kept me busy. I was so busy that some shots I thought would make great entries in the wooden challenge did not get processed before the submission deadline.
I will be adding to that gallery. You may be interested to know that many of those pictures use the "painting with color" technique I have mentioned before. :)
Wow! Those are amazing images. THe colors are fantastic.
Just FYI, I'll be out of town from Friday till next Thursday. I expect that packing / unpacking puts me out of commission for more than a week, so if I'm not participating it's not 'cause I'm not enjoying this! I'm learning quite a bit, and the practice assignments are fun. Have a good week.
what's the circle thing in the middle of the selection and what would be it's use? i noticed i can move it around, but i see no use in doing so. thanks, this is great!! still working my way through the tutorial, obviously:)
That circle thing is like a pivot point for roatation, etc. Right in the center. Drage it somewhere else and then get the Image/Rotate thing going and you will understand.

edit: BTW, to change the size of a free transform on my PS6.0.1 you hold down SHIFT while resizing, not CTRL. also, i have filter->render->lighting effects on this version, maybe the little (free) software update from 6 to 6.0.1 added it?

Michelle... great feedback about PS 6... my version doesn't got much in it at all.
Your contrast match with the dog to the landscape is really good. Kudos to you for a great job!
Above is my first assignment. I have to admit, I get a little impatient selecting sometimes, I hope as my skills improve it won't be quite so tedious.

Just understand that this is an easy selection! More sophisticated ones require more work. Selection is almost an artform but it is well worth the effort.

Dog is resized and placed very well, but you still need to work on contrast matching... Might try either brightness/contrast or (my favorite) selective color to match the contrast a little better.
