I try not to read too much into the numbers. Most people have some internalized "grading system" they use - you'd never know how meaningful the number is unless you looked at each rater's running average. Meaning if they give you a 7, but their average is 4.9, you did pretty good, but if they give you a 9 and their average is 8.3, you really didn't do so hot. Each number is comparative to the rater.
I have got some great comments so far. I have 10 and a couple didn't say alot (which to me says tons about how my picture is being perceived), but the others are 50/50 good & bad and they have mostly pointed out directly what they did or did not like about my image.
Now I can handle any score as long as this continues!
BTW, sitting around 5.4ish right now, been as high as 5.9
Scoring seems to be particualarly hard on this challenge. My picture has dropped from 6.13 yesterday to 5.90 right now. It has 17 comments, one negative and the other 16 are compliments - it would be so nice if the people who are giving such low votes would at least say why.
Best of any picture I've ever submitted and I really didn't like this one. Isn't that funny. Probably means that my eye isn't very good. It is also the most comments I've ever gotten and I thank those people. They are very helpful and I can see what I can do different to make it better. I try to leave comments, but I am still trying to figure my own pictures, and don't feel that I have any right to comment on others.
My average has dropped slightly, still a rather abysmal 4.5337, and only 2 comments as of now. Oh well, I didn't expect to do very well on my first attempt. But it was fun all the same, and I can hope my next entry will do marginally better.
Although, frankly, I feel like a small fish in a big lake of talented photographers.
All I gotta say is I hope all the people using mercury for this challenge were VERY careful with it and disposed of it properly.... it is EXTREMELY toxic and VERY hard to dispose of.
