Both would qualify in my mind. The first one might be better in BW - I'm just not liking the color combination in it. The second is good, but not enough detail to make it interesting and too much to make it more impressive with regard to the challenge. IMHO, of course.
Now - go shoot a bird in the reflection of a lake to get that whole sky, water, bird expectation thing. :) Best of luck!
heres the way i look at it
if the "subject" fills more than a forth of the entire image - it will get low vote from me - because as bearmusic points out it will not fit the challenge (as opposed to the title).
if there is no obvious "subject" (ie if yousome have to tell me where to look to 'get' the image) it will get a low vote because if it isnt obvious, how can you even claim it is the subject of the image?
obviously i will try to take my photo accordingly.
The fourth of an image restriction that you are applying sounds a bit arbitrary to me as is your opinion to how obvious the subject is.
Saying that, I want to make it clear that as an artist being arbitrary is a positive thing. In the art world it is called Poetic or Creative License, rather then being arbitrary. I think as an artist you should push the limits....As a judge you need to realize good art does just that and the being arbitrary in the judging does not serve the truth of the piece of art or what the artist is trying to say.
I consider much of my art work as minimalist work. Most of the examples I see in this thread does not meet my definition of what minimalism is.. frankly I am not even sure of what the subject is in some of it. Becuase of the name of the Challenge and the creators discription which in my opinion are at odds with each other, I think the real challenge in this "challenge" is to be able to judge all entries based on how the "artist" interprets the challenge.
Barry - No disrespect, but I think you are forgetting this is a challenge. So it has some rules and parameters...granted a bit vague, but still there are some restrictions. If an "Artist" wants to express their artistic freedom more power to them, but they shouldn't expect to receive a high score on their challenge entry if it's too far outside the challenge parameters. There have been a few threads about being "outside the box" - I think the conversation in those threads are similar to what you are saying.
So, to summarize MY opinion - submit whatever photo you want for the challenge and make the object of focus fairly small if you want to score well.

Barry no disrespect taken...this stuff is all very subjective. I have a background in art and I love talking about this stuff. And of course I like pushing the envolope to get people to think...not to be a trouble maker but to push people along to a different level. BTW, the ribbon thing is nice but not my motivation to be part of this group.

MY head is explaoding, or is it imploding? We have 2 camps here, apparently; those who think the challenge is the TITLE, and those who think it's the DESCRIPTION, and title and description are basically at odds with each other. Not completely at odds, because it is possible to take a truly "minimalist" photo that fits the challenge description as well, and I think (hope) that's what I've accomplished, but there are a LOT of truly minimalist photos that fill the frame witht heir subject, and there's a conflict there.
I agree with Barry. There's a bit of conflict between the Challenge title and the implied rule of size.
I hope that people vote with an open mind and give credit to any image that meets either definition or interpretation.
To vote down a true minimalist image in a Minimalism challenge because it doesn't fit the size rule is just plain nuts IMHO.
I'm a stickler for staying within the guidelines but an amazing minimalist image should get a fair shake. There should be plenty of room here to make allowances for quality and still maintain great competative challenge.

I guess in a nut shell if it is the least it can be in area without becoming a nothing or singular without expression.
Enough pieces of an object that you could tell what that object was.
Man I can not wait for this challenge to start. I love my photo and despite the fact I know it's really risky, I want to know what others think. It's either going to completely bomb or it'll maybe make people feel the same way that I do about it!!! Ahh can't stand the wait!!

The description has an implication in it for me that the whole subject ought take up part of the frame - your lampost also takes us out of the frame, and is not "in" the image space for me. Cannot explain very well.
I am also extremely concerned, as the two examples above are sure to get too small and too big comments, even though both met the challenge IMO.
Or "too big" and "just right" maybe.... But I think you need to decenter the blob and perhaps allow not so blown out a background... (runs for shelter)
I was looking at this thread posted by ahaze and as I looked through the photographs I came across this on that I think represents 'minimalism' very well. What do you think?
These are some pretty late ideas for people and just ideas not photo's.
But some bent incense with some smoke might make for a good submission.
Also match stick burning..or something to that effect.
Piece of metal mesh all the same....pull one of the peice sout so it is away from the rest.
Just some of my idea's if anyone wanted to get inspired.
Less than 3 hours to go and DustDevil tries to psyche out the competition by giving them new, interesting ideas to rush out and hastily throw together to replace their well-thought-out, already-submitted, but questionable-quality-and-challenge-qualified photo. ;-)
