Can we exclude the 30+ 'congrats' comments that we get after we win a ribbon from those received? :P Else I'm gonna have to comment on 400-odd pictures in the next week - my poor fingers! I guess I need to stop writing essays in my comments.
I think I know the answer on this but I am going to ask the question anyhow. I am a registered user not a member so am a correct in the assumption that when you used the word member in your discription that registered users won't be allow to take part in this challenge??
I signed up in March and have taken part in four challenges to date.

seems to me the rules exclude people who meet the requirements (or desired results that you are looking for) and who could possibly be productive members. Maybe requirements should be rethought.

As a Registered User, you are welcome to participate in as many of our weekly Open Challenges as you like. We do, however, restrict the weekly Members Challenge, and almost all of the extra challenges, to our site members. This is a big part of the "something extra" they get for helping to pay the bandwidth and storage bills to keep the site running.
If you've been "on the fence" about becoming a member, now might be a good time to join. Membership is only $25 for the year. If you prefer to try it out for a month to see if you like it, a 1-month subscription is $5. Membership entitles you to enter the weekly Open and Members challenges, additional Members Challenges as they are announced, Speed Challenges, and any Invitational Challenges for which you meet the invitation criteria.
Even if you choose not to join, you'll probably benefit from this challenge in the form of extra comments from members who are racing to qualify for this challenge (I need to make 127 myself!). You just won't be able to enter.

Sure. Tell us what you see. You have opinions; you have thoughts when you look at a photo. Share them!
Comments can be very enlightening, especially the ones you make on other's photos. Being inexperienced should not stop you as you probably know what you like and/or dislike and are able to say why (this is the hard part). You don't have to state what can be done to change it. Just be polite.

Something as simple as saying 'I like the X' can be a good comment as it could be that is what the photographer wanted to communicate and by saying you are liking it (or disliking it) is telling them that either they did communicate that or not. It's not always about the technicals but what and how the photograph communicates that people want to know.

A very good idea , I'm trying to follow your "rule" to leave 2 comments for each one received.I'm a newbie too but I'm loosing my shyness , I try to give my opinion or my advice , it's hard to be constructive but it's not impossible.
I've learnt a lot since I'm here and I feel obliged to try to help.
I think one should look on the 'congrats' comments one recieves with a ribbon as a little penalty for the chuffedness you experience on getting that ribbon.
There should be a 'report comment' button. I wondered why my free study entry got 3 more comments over night. Well, here are two of them -- "ok" and "not interesting as others" -- someone's flying through them, but I don't know who -- they're hidden during voting.

Thanks for the fast reply...I kind of figured that would be the answer so there is no surprise on my end....I figure it is always best to ask.
Thank you for the welcome, I like this website very much and it has helped me already in the few weeks I have been here... I have many years of photography under my belt but when it comes to the new technology of cameras and computers I am way behind the rest of the world...still trying to figure out the Levels, curves etc...as well as learning all the doo dads of the digital camera. Membership is in my future but not right now as we have just bought our first house and the ins and outs of feeding our kids and paying for the mortage have been all figured out yet.
oh no i am eligable but won't be here, !!! although i will be at the Australian Portrait Prize Photography Awards announcement... YES... i have made it to the finalist's.. of about 30 i think... reward.....$15 000 .... wouldn't that be nice.....

I took a look at your comments received, and the comments left by the individuals who left the comments in question. Of the two comments you mention, the "ok" comment actully came on the 21st, and the "not as interesting" came after the announcement. Both leave mostly constructive comments, and both have significantly more comments than they have received.
I certainly understand your reason for concern on these comments and appreciate you pointing them out. In this case, though, it looks like everything is ok.

I do not need the comment numbers. I have commented over 15% yet there are times I have very little to say. Sometimes the photo only gets one word. If becomes difficult to explain why you do not like a photo. Its easy when it is out of focus, cropped poorly or post processing is done poorly. The only one words I have done is Beautiful and cute.
Anyway, perhaps I need to add more to that.

I haven't given many one word comments but I have received many. I like all comments. For a current challenge I got a comment, "cliche." Well I can certainly see what the commenter was talking about and I will have to try and avoid that in the future. If the comment is a good comment or an OK comment I think sometimes one or two words is enough. When the comment is negative then I feel further explaination is required. I don't feel sorry for whiners that complain about "Great Shot" or "Beautiful" comments when they get them. I would be happy with as many of them as I can get.

I know I would benefit much if you spent some of your comments on my portfolio. I have some space for comments: (Made 850+ Received 150+) . And lordy knows I need the help in figuring out when a photo is interesting and when it is pure crap.

Congratulations Kelly. That's probably the biggest cash prize I have heard of a dpc member having a serious shot at winning. Even though you are fairly new here we are pround to have a finalist among our ranks. Let us know how you did when you return, and Good Luck!
