I just can't understand how our government can stand infront of a group of scientists and tell them they are wrong.
Yes. It would be rather nice if they could share the information explaining how the billions of tons of polutants that should cause this worrying phenomenon are miraculously having no effect after all.

Guess what, the earth gets warmer and colder in cycles. Do a little research and you discover that the earth still has not recovered completely from the last ice age and we should be much much warmer. That just on a natural cycle.
Sure you can point to various aspects like greenhouse gases. But we put out tons of hydrocarbon pollution 300 yrs ago. London was black in the skies from the amount of wood and coal burned.
The questions is NOT whether the earth is warming or not. But how much of that is due to man? In fact, the number one contributor to man-made temperature increase is probably not our gases released but in fact our cementification of land. We've turn much land formerly with trees and grasses that absorbed and used energy into cement and hardened dirt, blacktop, etc. This greatly increases the heat/radiation in said areas.

Most of the computer models that scientists have used for the global warming estimates have been flawed and proven so. Some of them said we should already be degrees hotter and dead.
Does that mean we should NOT be good stewards? that we should not reduce out pollutants and manage the economy wisely? of course not...

I'm with you, Saj. I've heard "experts" say that we've already passed the point of no return - no possibility of reversal.
As far as oil companies funding research or groups that have a point of view that differs from the alarmists - I would fund legitimate research to counter disinformation if it was hurting my business.
I fail to understand why people think of oil companies as "Evil Monsters" - they are run by people - humans - with children and grandchildren. There is greed in every industry and I could point out other industries that are doing more damage to the human race.
The earth is going to warm and cool, just as it has for eons. I think the change in temperatures is mostly due to changes in solar activity and output. I don't think science can predict temperatures 50 years from now, they can't even get it right for next week! Environmentalists oppose almost every form of human technological advance. Nuclear energy emits no green house gasses, but the industry was destroyed by environmentalists. You say environmentalists are for windmills, but if they really became prevelant, they would demand their removal because they chop up too many birds. We all want a clean and helthy earth. The best way to protect the environment is by promoting the technological advancement of the human race, not by trying to send the human race back to the stone age.

Right on Saj. The earth is still in a warming trend and may not peak for a few hundred years. But there have always been 'mini cycles' within the ice age cycles and a temporary reversal would not necessarily herald a new ice age. According to one report, some glaciers in the U.S. are gaining while others are receding. Go figure!
As a side note, I had hoped some people would already be aware of what’s happening and be able to understand what this means. The fact that people are here stating "those crazy scientists" just goes to show how this propaganda campaign by Exxon and other giants has worked.
Also, I am saddened to see no other threads for Earth Day here on a photography/nature lover community.
Maybe if the Earth warms up a smudge we wont have to use fossil fuels to heat our homes so much. And for air conditioners we could build some more windmills for electricity and help the Earth in that way. We would all sweat more and be thiner, there would be less need for heavy clothing, help would arrive for the poor animals that give their skins and furs for coats because who would wear a coat in hundred degree temps. We can only hope for the best. And Castro raised the minimum wage in Cuba. What is the min wage there anyway?

What's the minimum wage in the United States? Not too good the last I looked...a little over $5.00/hr. I guess if you want clean air and a healthy environment you are associated with communists/socialists. Red baiting doesn't solve anything or lead to constructive communication, but history shows has destroyed lives.

Where is global warmimg? It sure as hell isn't anywhere near Chicago! I had to move back to Chicago from Omaha, Ne. 5 years ago for economic reasons and have not experienced a real summer here since I moved back. And depressingly enough, it is obvious that this year will be the fifth year in a row without a summer here in Chicago. The Chicago summer weather pattern started a couple of days ago; namely the jet stream way the hell south of Chicago, bone-chilling winds alternatly off of the North Pole and Lake Michigan, a new 'strong for this time of year' cold front every 2 or 3 days. If I didn't have to work for a living I would move the hell away from here to a place that is at least warm SOME of the year.

Tell me about it, I'm from West PA. It's the end of April and it's freezing and actually snowing outside right now! WTF?
I'm not sure that I believe the whole global warming thing is as bad as the doomsayers indicate it is. You have the environmentalists saying that the world is gonna end if we don't stop polluting and start driving electric/solar cars, using 'clean fuel', recycle, etc. And then you have the big corporations saying nothing is wrong at all. The truth probably lies somewhere inbetween the two extremes. I however, don't plan on getting a recycling bin or selling my SUV anytime soon.
Here's an interesting show that I saw on Horizons (BBC documentary style show) a few weeks ago about Global Dimming. It suggestes that the pollution that is in the atmosphere actually has been shielding us from the full power of solar rays and that if we begin to do environ clean-up (ala Kyoto treaty) that we will actually make things worse than they already are. But, if we continue polluting (to protect use from solar rays / warming), the air will become toxic. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Two things:
1. Why is it only a small group of scientists,mainly US, who are going against respected scientists from all around the world in saying global warming is not happening? Could this be because doing something about it would be more expensive, problematical for US than any other country?
2. A report on wind farms on BBC this morning said that in experiments tracking birds flying near, around, through windfarms showed the birds avoided them, plotted courses through them or flew above them. As they are quite used to avoided skyscrapers etc, I should think they can easily cope with windfarms!
Why would you not want to error on the side of caution. Yeah, sometimes scientists are wrong... but that is no reason to ignore all science that does not fit your ideology.
I have one question: I don't mean to make this personal... this is an honest question.... Why are so many people hostile toward recycling and clean burning fuels? I can understand not partipating..... but to try to get others to stop?
What is the harm in trying to keep the earth cleaner we recieved it? Where do you get your insparation?
