I'm from Sweden and having a hard day trying to understand the rules?
My question is that I have a picture of a girl, am I allowed to crop her out of the picture and blur the background and then crop her back again?
If not, is there any other way that I can perform this action within the walls of the rules?
May I change the light-level, make the picture darker?
I hope someone can help me out with these newbies questions ;-)
Since you are not a member it means you can only enter the basic editing challenges. Within those challenges you cannot do the things you want. Basic editing means that any changes you do has to be done to the entire image.
You can lighten/darken the entire image using levels, curves, or brightness/contrast.
1. use NO selections whatsoever; they are forbidden in basic editing.
2. use NO filters except "noise", "gaussian blur", and sharpening filters in photoshop; any other effects filters are forbidden.
3. use NO dodging or burning, NO tools whatsoever that change only certain areas of an image, whether they require a selection or not.
4. use ONLY layers that can be accessed under the "layers/new adjustment layer" menu in PS; these layers contain NO pixel information, and layers with pixel information are forbidden.
5. don't ADD anything to your image that wasn't there before, or REMOVE anything from your image that was there to begin with, EXCEPT you may crop the image as much as you like, and you may use a simple border.
Not embarrassing at all Marcus. :-)
Much more embarrassing I think when someone comes back whining after being DQ'd because they didn't read or understand the rules.
My understanding is that you also can't duplicate a layer and use "Multiply" or "Screen" etc. when working with layers in Photoshop, even if no selection is made. (Perhaps that was already covered by point #4 of Robt.'s post, below.)
<<<4. use ONLY layers that can be accessed under the "layers/new adjustment layer" menu in PS; these layers contain NO pixel information, and layers with pixel information are forbidden. >>>
If you can create an adjustment layer, say levels, can you then apply a gradient to it? What I could do with it is e.g. apply levels, and use a black-to-transparent gradient to only affect certain portions of the photo.
while were asking questions about basic rules i'll ask one i've had. If you are using an adjustment layer are you allowed to crop the the layer so that it in effect only effect the top half of an image?....pushing it I know.. but hey I havn't used it yet.
That's obviously making a selection (at least obvious to me). it is not allowed. Cropping layers is in this case no different from making a selection and editing it. However, applying a gradient to the whole layer is a gray area (which I would very much like to use in basic editing!)

Either of these would constitute "making a selection" and are not allowed under the Basic Rules. The gradient is just a very complex selection.
