I wanna know what people think of a child in pain. Like actually hurt his/herself? If that was captured on camera, would it get lower ratings cuz it's a child? I'm not saying severe pain, or and ER visit, but something that a mother or father can hug their child and be like "its ok". That is what I'm wondering before I decide what I really want to enter. Cuz today, where I'm at, there was quite a few things involving PAIN that I captured. All over town, and I'm wondering what people would think of the child in pain.
I think they'll actualy be a couple of cute ones like that. Kinda like a band-aid add. You see the child's pain but then there's also comfort from the parents. I think it's very tastefull and I don't think people will vote those down. There's a chance to make very emotional photographs and some of them will reach out to voters in a good way.

Well it all comes down to whether it is an 'art' shot or a snapshot (And the snapshot might not fare so well)
I'm shocked by the responses to terje's photos. I think they would (and should) do extremely well in the challenge. If that's not pain, I don't know what is. Amazing event photography, technically and artisticly. Great work.

I am not shocked at all at some of the comments made, since they question where the expression of pain is. The photos do convey an activity which I am sure most of us would find painful,,, however, the images do not seem to convey that the person in the photo is indeed experiencing pain.
We all view things differently I guess. In my case, were you to photograph my face when the bills come in, I am certain you could detect a very painful look.

PS. You are quite right regarding the quality of the work done here.
There is a big difference between pain and discomfort... I am sure most people have watched a loved one suffer from cancer, or other such disease. I for one am not interested in such a challenge. But as a zealous American, I defend each and every ones right to pursue this challenge. Knock Yourselves Out !!! (And try to get a photo :) while you're at it.)

Actually, I think they DO convey that the person in the photo is experiencing pain BUT they show him ENJOYING it and that's not what people EXPECT to see.
Pain for MOST of us is unpleasant so it's hard to comprehend that for a few people it's something that is enjoyed.
Well I'm going to vote on all the images using one criteria:
if it makes me wince, and the photo is artistically well captured I don't care whether the image depicts something like Terje's images, a child with a bruised knee or a wedding ring and divorce papers.
Note the words 'artistically well captured' - this means that snapshots of a child in the back garden will score 3, it means that badly lit flat images of a wedding ring will score 3, a washed out snap of a nipple piercing will score 3.

btw - I found Terje's photos to fit the challenge very well, the vast majority would score highly in my voting
Gross or not.. I still believe in photographing emotions. Pain is a excellent challenge, that will challenge the photographer a little more then "Sign" or "Green". :)
Hope dpc can have more emotion challenges in the future: "Happiness, Sorrow, Anger, etc" :)

I would also like to see more emotion challenges. However, the original pictures do not convey pain. That guy is enjoying what he is doing.

Not sure if they would have done well as challenge entries, as they are probably too shocking for a lot of people here, but I think they are sensational and the quality of the photography is excellent.

I disagree. Yes, he is enjoying it, but that does not mean it is not extremely painful. He is a masochist, which means he enjoys pain .... so the two are most definitely not mutually exclusive.
Because most people would not find pain enjoyable, does not mean that if someone else is enjoying an activity like that it is painless.

I would think that photos of children in general are done to death. It would have to be an extrememly well done shot to do well.

I think that a photo of a child in pain also has the ability to create pain for the individual looking at that photo. The ability for the viewer to feel the pain of the child is powerful. That can be difference between a snapshot and an artistic photo.
The "rules" composition can go out the window if the photo is painful for all who view it. We have all seen these photos. For example, this photo. In these cases the lines of photojournalism and art can blur. What is left is a timeless reminder of the amount of pain that humans can suffer because of one another.

Hmmmm, I'm having labor induced Tuesday morning, if I don't go before.

Well, think on it ......
There are, say, 300 people here all looking to enter that challenge. Lets say 10% of them think the labor thing would represent pain well.
So, think how it will help take your mind of the labor poain if you have all 30 photographers in there with you, frantically snapping photos of your face (yes, just that) as you scream out :)
Don't be selfish, share your pain that way :)
Also, share any decent drugs they may hand out, they are sooooo wasted on the mother *ducks before he needs serious painkillers himself*

Look through some of these and you might get some good ideas or inspiration. Not all are pain, but there are some that are extremely emotive in that vein, anyway. :o)

I find it hard to beleive a child is in pain when they almost always go from bawling to laughter in a split second...
jimmythefish it right on the button. I thought to myself...how many photos will we see with people having their heads down, and showing photos of depression, etc. I think Im going to try the physical aspect of pain and give it a shot. Too bad there arent any Halloween stores open around this time of year.
