I know this is a lousy shot, but a friend challenged me to find out where he is right now based on it. Anyone have any clues? I know this isn't really a photography question as such, but I really'd like to beat him at his own game. Thanks a bunch.

A good hint is how many people are climbing it at the same time, I count 23 that can be seen in the one photo, theere are more then that off camera. Another hint is that a fair number of people die on this Mountain, but it can be very easy to climb.
I found a shot on Google Images taken from virtually the same spot. (scroll down a bit on the page to find it on the left).
Very good indeed. This is the second most climbed mountain in the world, second only to Mt. Fuji. I took the first photo in 1991 and the other two in 1992. This mountain kills a lot of people because it can be so easy to climb, when the conditions are right, when they are wrong it is deadly.

Ok here's a hint:
There's a certain street, in a totaly different country, that I am sure everyone had heard of.
The street that is in my photo, was an attemp to copy the more famouse one and make it better. A very successful attempt actually. Infact, the street that is in my photo is even bigger then the "original" for this reason.
Try to use my hint. Something in my picture might be more familliar in another country. What might it be? If you find the "original" street, it might be easier to find this one...
nope i'm stumped on the photo location... as for where americans can't go.. yes there are places americans are not allowed. back around 98'mI was traveling europe. I wanted to slip into Romania. I wanted to take pictures of dracula's castle... When I arrived at the border with my passport I was told that the border was closed to americans... I'm not sure how often this happens but with the United states current reputation. I wouldn't be supprised to find it as fairly common.
I had no idea that Americans might have problem getting into Romania or any other European country for that matter. Cuba is a different issue I suppose.
As for Romania, that must have been a very special circumstances. I'm sure there was something irregular in that border point at that time or somthing in your passport. I have been to Romania in 2003 (or was it 2004?) with some friends who carry an American passport (and another one who has a Canadian passport), and they had no problem at all.
In any case, how ironic, this photo is from... Romania.
This is the rue central of Bucharest, which is a copy of the Parissian Champs Elyssee, except it is 1 meter wider. Ceaucescu had to do things bigger then anyone else.
As for your trip, I can tell you one thing: if all you really wanted to see in Romania is the Bran castle (Dracula's), then you didn't miss much.
Of all the places in Romania, this one is the most boring and not exciting to see.
If you are interested though, I will upload to my portfolio some pictures of the Bran castle and of some other places in Romania later today.
It would have been 5 seconds if I hadn't been called away from my desk. I've never been to any of the places posted here, but that's the first one I didn't have to look up. ;-)
