I'm a part-time student at a local college and I can buy PS CS in the book store for $350CND. Thus far, THAT'S the cheapest. If you're a student: check out the campus bookstore.
I've passed this site on before. I have been buying software from them for years, and have never had any problems. I get original software, register it with the manufacturer (ie, Microsoft, Corel, Norton, etc), and get my support from the manufacturer.

Well, I'll tell you anyway...in another thread, everyone was just talking about 'curves' and I threw my hands in the air and said "I need to get the 'real' Photoshop!" and was about to start a thread asking what was the cheapest way to get my hands on this piece of magic since all I have is PSElements and I hate converting to b&w in there...
So is this the cheapest option? How much is it normally? Is it worth it?
You don't have buy the over-priced "industry standard" to get Curves. Paint Shop Pro has had Curves since, at least, version 7. The current version is 9 and it sells for $119 full price. Download a trial version here Jasc products. Why not give it a try before shelling out the big bucks?

I know...the only thing is, I really aim to eventually take photographs for a living and I think I'll be kicking myself if I don't begin to learn the industry standard...overpriced as it is.
...but maybe (and perhaps you veterans can correct me) if I just learn the fundamentals and concepts (curves, layers, channels, etc.) on the cheaper/free programs I can apply them to Photoshop when the time comes?
i don't have any experience with the cheapy programs (I've been using photoshop since version 2.5), but i would say that you should just take the plunge and start learning. once you jump in, you can always buy the later upgrades cheap.
*shrug* i guess it's a lot easier for me to say that with an educational discount at hand. :D know any friendly students or teachers? ;)

I think I'm still technically a student at the college down the street (I've been taking some purchasing courses), but I checked their website and it doesn't look like their store sells Photoshop.

Really ... mine's actually "used" Photoshop for almost 6 years now ... as a second-grader I have a lot of time to redeem that discount : )

Actually, to get the educational discount, you need to be either:
1. A student enrolled in K-12
2. A student enrolled at an institute of higher learning (university, college, community college, some trade schools.
3. A teacher, instructor or professor at one of the above.
