What stinks is that I just got a comment that mentioned that my photograph could have been staged. It wasn't said in a negative way, just suggesting that it could have been staged, but probably wasn't. They also gave me a decent score (told me the score they gave me).
What stinks about it, is, that's probably why my score is dropping and is fairly low for this photograph. Now at 5.3, a few minutes ago I posted that it was 5.4. Had been 5.9.
So, for all of us who have a staged looking, but not staged, photo, we are getting low scores for nothing. After the voting when these people see that the photo was actually not staged, they can't go back and change the vote. Just an "Oops, sorry." So a potential blue ribbon winner may not get the blue because of this. I'm not saying that would be my photo, but it could be yours.
It looks like a lot of people's scores have been dropping, but mine seems to be dropping way too much.
At 15 votes I was at a 7.0. I went to bed with 30 votes and had a 6.2. When I woke up this morning I had 65 votes and a 5.6 and how I have:

I was really bummed, as I like this shot a lot. And I know why it's doing not that well, but I thought people would be able to look past it. And I know some people have, as the commentors have told me.
Sniffle, Sniffle. I submitted a photo that I really loved. But I edited it at home on my brand new 19 inch flatscreen monitor. When I submitted it, I thought it was perfect, but I got a comment that it was a little to dark. when I came to work and looked at it, sure enough, it was MUCH darker than it was at home. Much darker than I intended it to be. What a disappointment, because I really think it would have scored high if I had edited it on not such a bright, crystal clear monitor :( My score is at 5.79 -- not horrible -- but not what I think it would have been either. Oh well. Live and learn.

Before submitting my photo I asked two people, one photographer for a local paper and one that is a Professor of Fine Arts at our local University. I sent them the original file with the editing but not cropped. Both gave me great critiques. I asked them to rate it from 1-10 and they did [but said it is hard to rate a photograph in such a scale] and it got a rating from them of a 7.5 and 9 respectively. But I then cropped the photograph and I believe I took a lot of the impact away from the photograph and it is sitting at 5.19+. So I blame myself for the failure of my entry.

It's also conceivable that the two critics you involved are just plain more appreciative than the DPC popular mean. I'd revisit the cropped version and compare it to whatever facts the critiques revealed. If these, still, hold true, it should stem any sentiments of failure. If not, perhaps, you diminished the original.
Whatever the case, this experience may come to bear on your next shot. ;-)

I wanted to know if there was something I was doing wrong because I can’t seem to get a higher vote average received. Basically I wanted to know if there were technical flaws that would bring down the picture.

I think that is one of the reason we enter our images into the challenges, to find out if there are technical flaws in it.
What would you have done if one of your experts had said your image needed an easy little tweak to make it perfect? I'm sure you would have, at the very least, been tempted to make the tweak and then enter the perfected image. But if you had done that wouldn't your conscience nag at you about the rule that says your entry is supposed to be your own work? Why not wait until after you have submitted to get the critiques from your two technical experts/friends? That way no one could suspect that you had outside help with your challenge images.

Perhaps you are hearing only what you want to hear from the SC. There are many things that can, and do, go on here that are not tecnically against the rules, and that the SC will tell you that they will not lead to a DQ. But that does not mean they are the right thing to do. An awful lot of the patroling of the rules, both the written rules and the spirit and intent they represent, is done on the Honor System. We depend on each other to do the right thing because we know that it would be impossible for the SC and admins to catch all the violations, intentional or otherwise. Why can't you just wait until after submitting to share the image, for whatever reason. No possibility of you being tempted to make that tweak and you would be setting a good example for the newbies as well.

Just about to break into the 6's, with nice comments and not even so much as 1 (one) saying it looks posed, which it obviously isn't.
