i would of gone for a sepia myself... but then i read the description and it said "Reduce the world to a palette of grays..." and i figured i better stay away from any sepia toning since alot of voters will take that "palette of grays" literally.

My job is a oil paint teacher (even tho I don't practice), but in my job/world a "grey" can mean any color. Anyone who been through an art school wil agree that there are "grey tones" of blue wich are caled "cold greys", there are "grey tones" of yellow wich are worm, there are all sorts of grey tones... Reducing "grays" to just combination of black and white is not ok with me but I agree most voters won't see it that way so I also stayed away from any sepia toning...

Any request for a DQ on the grounds that the photo does not meet the challenge topic will be ignored -- it says so right in the rules.
You have a color photograph and you have a b&w photograph. Now, if you take a sepia toned b&w photo then I doubt you will categorize it as a color photo. Ofcourse it's a b&w photo.

In all due respect I have to disagree, you have a sepia photograph which is defined as a brown tint.

NOW achromatic means:
1. Designating color perceived to have zero saturation and therefore no hue, such as neutral grays, white, or black.
I just had a discussion with a fellow photographer (a very well trained photographer). She has a masters in Photography and studied at one of the best schools in North America. Her gripe is that in school, students dissected other's work just for the sake of hearing their own voices. As it was mentioned in another thread, people spend 2-3 hours critiquing 20 pieces of work, which by her proclamation, was just outrageous.
She told me specifically that people would bring amazing works of art (photographs) and other students would just go looking for something negative to say (perhaps since it made them feel better about their own project???).
Anyway, point being, I see no need to spend ages picking apart all 600+ photos.
I apologize if I beat a dead horse here. For black and white II there are 643 entries, that has sort of a Walmart feel to it. Obviously it's mushroomed from the time I spent a year here in 2002/2003 where we'd usually judge less than 400. Over the course of 7 days voting that's about 91 per day I have to vote on. Now I know I only have to vote on 20%, but that's 80% (514) I probably will never see. I majored in art (for a while) and we would take 2-3 hours just critiquing 20 projects. How do we escape this problem. Is it a problem? What about creating 4, 5, or even 6 OPEN challenges to "spread the love" and the individuals involved would only have to vote on their own particular challenges. I think it's great that there are so many enthusiastic people that want to participate, but I also think it's almost a disservice to them if 1) We expect them to critique or at least evaluate almost 650 pictures. 2) Their own photo may only get thumbs point of view assesment. I see folks on the forums complaining their shots are getting hammered but no one is leaving comments. There just isn't any way to (IMHO) to evaluate a picture in 5 seconds.

oh man four minutes too late. I'm not suggesting we spend 2 hours over 20 pictures. I'm just thinking there may be a way to improve upon the mass of mediocrity out there. and I'll be the first one to admit my work is bad. that's why I need help!!!
How should I vote on sepia tone? I don't call brown black or white, it is not even gray.
I need some input.
I think sepia should not be allowed should be voted accordingly.I had shot a couple of photos in sepia which were a lot better than my current submission for B&WII.But since my cam has two modes - Sepia and B&W I presumed sepia 'd be disqualified.
