Great job; nice description of clever technique. I agree this should have done better.

That's both a pretty bird and the name of my music publishing "company," named after the tract in Berkeley where I used to live before the place I'm in now.

Also resembles the logo of a pro photo lab near where I work, Cantoo.

Very nice job!

: ) I found the parasailer easily enough, mostly because (based on the thumbnail view) I was looking to see which end of those contrails the planes were at.

I think I might agree with leaf that it could be cropped a little top and bottom (I'd crop to a 3:2 ratio) without losing anything critical; perhaps the river disappearing in the trees in the lower-left. I think that's compensated-for by puting the parasailer (title subject) real close to the top edge. That makes it easier to spot, and it's a goodway to isolate and add visual strength and importance to a small subject (c.f. Cowspace by Remie for the example which came to mind).

Wonderful image; nice thought; cutsey title. Framing though? Hmm... The hands are so much a part of the bars image-wise, that what I see is ALL frame and no image. Maybe if there was some kind of background indicative of a gulag or penal camp, maybe then it would have a foreground frame and background image and seem to qualify more for this challenge. That's just my humble opinion, and I could be wrong. Again, nice image. I really like the subdued lighting on the hands.

Because my "internal picture" of a cell window as seen from the outside involves a neutral-gray stone or concrete wall, I wanted to use the DPC page background to create (by implication) the edges of the "window," framing the arms and bars against the darker gray of what is supposed to be the back wall of the cell.

I was hoping the dark dark grays would symbolize the hoplessness of the imprisoned, and barrenness of their environment. I also needed to disguise the fact that my "prisoner" is only seven years old : )

Here's a couple of versions where I used exactly the same gray outside the image, but added a few details to make its purpose more obvious.

This is great ... reminds me (positively) of some photos taken by a freind of mine, who is my only real contact with the world of professional photography.

The flames seem to have gotten a little over-exposed/banded, but this is a minor flaw which in no way detracts from the impact of the photo. I've become a fan of the square crop, and it works well with your composition.

If we get an "Industrial" gallery category I hope you put it there.

You have enough deep color and (seeming) sharpness in the fore- and middle-ground plants that it really helps set-off the mood and feel of the foggy background. It seems overwhelmingly middle-tones but actually has a substantial range and contrast. Good job handling a tricky lighting situation. I have a bunch of recent pictures from the Puget Sound area which I wish would turn out as well as this one.

Congratulations -- be sure to post a picture of the printed calendar when it comes out.

Thanks, it was a lucky catch!

Taken at the Leeds Mela. I was stunned by the misogynistic artwork on this family fairground ride ...

... Which you've accentuated even more with your cropping/composition. The fortuitous "model" is perfect. Excellent job overall!
